Following up on my column of a couple of weeks ago, I know that we have many people in Lexington who go to great lengths to make sure that their homes, yards, and other outdoor areas are well kept, are clean, and look neat and attractive. We have those who have restored older homes, as well as those who put in a lot of time and effort, into making newer homes look very nice. We also appreciate those folks, like the family that I highlighted a couple of weeks ago, who work hard to have nice yards and other outdoor areas, which always have the appearance of being neat and well trimmed. We certainly applaud you residents who continually go the extra mile to maintain your property, and keep it looking as good as possible.
Unfortunately, we have some people in our Community who are putting out little or no effort to keep their homes and outdoor areas looking nice and attractive. We have those who have allowed grass and weeds to grow out of control, yards with trash scattered everywhere, vehicles with no license plates parked on the street and in yards, homes that have not been tended to, and the list goes on.
We are getting quite a few complaints at City Hall concerning some of the issues that I have just mentioned, and this is one of the most pressing issues that we have in the City right now. Folks need to realize that we have City Ordinances that address the proper care, condition, and appearance of property, and we are all expected to follow those Ordinances. Some of the problem areas that I have mentioned have been an issue for a long time, and some have gotten worse recently.
City officials have been meeting on this issue, and it has been emphasized at City Council meetings, that we need to make sure that Residents are following our City Ordinances, and are taking care of their homes and property in a way that our City Ordinances say they should be maintained.
One of our immediate goals is to clean up our City, and to do this, we plan to start issuing more Nuisance Citations for residents who refuse to comply with the law. We don’t enjoy writing these citations, but we are not going to let the appearance of certain properties continue to get worse and worse, and if writing tickets is what it takes, that is what we plan to do.
I might add, that if someone has a legitimate reason why they are unable to properly maintain their property, they may contact us at City Hall, and we will possibly try to help with this effort, if we can.
We are certainly not trying to be unreasonable, but if we don’t take action to make folks follow the law, the overall appearance of our Community will continue to go downhill.
Again we very much appreciate the many efforts of the large majority of you who work so hard to keep your homes and property in tip top shape, and let’s see if we can all work together to make our Town look as nice as it possibly can.
We Would Love to Have You Visit Soon!
